Druchtag Motte
Druchtag Motte dates from the 12th or 13th century and is probably Norman, mottes were a forerunner of a modern castle, usually having fortified wooden forts on top and a large ditch surrounding them beneath, some mottes became castles later, others like Druchtag became abandoned most likely as these earthworks could not support great weight without collapse, there are a few more mottes in the Machars such as at Myrton and Sorbie.
This one, easily found, at Mochrum Village would of been home to a fuedal lord and to reach it invaders would have to drag themslves up the steep bank. Thankfully now there is a strong rope to aid you!
