Wigtown Viewing Room and Wigtown Bay Nature Reserve

The majestic County Buildings and Town Hall at Wigtown is well worth a visit, it has on the ground floor, a small museum, the matrys cell, and on the top floor a viewing room.

Wigtown Bay local Nature Reserve Visitor Room provides excellent panoramic views of the area, over towards Creetown and around the Nature Reserve. There is live CCTV footage that visitors can watch, filming the wildlife in the Nature Reserve, information and leaflets about bird watching in Dumfries and Galloway.

Wigtown Bay LNR is the largest Local Nature Reserve (LNR) in Britain at just under 3000ha. It is managed by Dumfries and Galloway Council along with a management Committee of local interest groups. It was declared in 1996. It has 2 important rivers which bring fresh water into the Estuary. The River Cree protected for its Sparling and the River Bladnoch which is protected for its Spring run of Salmon. The Bay is bounded by the sea to the south. There is an extensive area of mud and sand flats bounded by Merse (saltmarsh) to the east and west. A fresh water wetland (Castle Field Wetland) has been created to allow close views of some of the bird species that use the Local Nature Reserve. This has also added an important habitat for freshwater invertebrates and amphibians.

  • Notable animal species include Pinkfoot, Greylag and Barnacle geese and Pintail, Shoveler and Wigeon as species of duck.  Notable waders include Curlew and Oystercatchers.  Otters may also be seen.
  • The Adder’s Tongue Fern is a notable rare plant species on the edge of the marsh.
