The Vanishing 2019 film and The Mull of Galloway
The Vanishing, previously titled Keepers, is a 2019 Scottish psychological thriller set at the Flannan Isles Lighthouse, Outer Hebrides which is notorious for the mysterious disappearances of three lighthouse keepers, Thomas Marshall, James Ducat and Donald MacArthur, discovered missing on the 26th of December 1900. The film stars Gerard Butler and Peter Mullan. It was released in the UK in March 2019 and now is available on DVD.
The Vanishing was filmed on the Rhins of Galloway, at Scotland's most southerly point, the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse, also at nearby Port Logan, and Killantringan Lighthouse near Portpatrick and Corsewall Lighthouse near Stranraer.
Visitors to the Mull of Galloway, can climb the 115 steps to the top of the lighthouse, and on a clear day are rewarded with fine views towards Ireland, Isle of Man and Cumbria. Wander the RSPB reserve, watch for diving Gannets and hope to see a Porpoise or two.
Visitors to Port Logan, can appreciate how the harbour was used for some scenes in the film and visit the nearby Logan Botanic Gardens that form part of the Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh. Logan Botanic Garden is famous for it's exotic tropical plants that flourish in the warmth of the Gulf Stream and was also used for some scenes in The Wicker Man film 1973.
