Solway Military Trail - Devil's Porridge Museum

Devils Poridge Museum

The Solway Military trail aims to promote different military sites to visit around the Solway to include main attractions such as Silloth Discovery Centre, Solway Aviation Musuem, The Devil's Porridge Museum, Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum, and John Paul Jones Birthplace Museum.

For an area The Solway was of extreme importance during wartime, there were so many airfields dedicated mostly to training, quite often for aircrew from other countries. 'Hudson Bay' as the Solway was named as so frequent were the crashes. Hurricanes flew from RAF Annan skimming the waves to rehearse attacks on Normandy by trying such sorties out on the Isle of Man. RAF Wigtown's role was to acclimatise observers trained abroad. And Garlieston used as the place to test and trial parts of the Mulberry harbour. More on all the above on future posts.

We visited the Devil's Porridge Museum with my grandaughters and learn't so much about the massive and grueling job that was the production of munitions, including 'stirring the devil's porridge' during the first world war, which might sound dull, but was brought to life by the great displays, interative displays and recordings, and also about nearby RAF Annan, as well as life in wartime and social history, see pic above. The Devil's museum made a great stopping place en route to the Machars, and we had a nice light lunch in it's cafe. Allow a couple of hours, great disabled access, admission charge.
